My husband and I were watching TV last night when we received a phone call that nobody wants to hear or ever get. It was my brother saying he was on his way to the hospital in Iowa City because Mom had just had a stroke. I was hysterical. I chatted with him for a minute and then my Dad beeped in. He was a wreck too telling me that he was waiting for the ambulance to arrive (my parents live in the middle of nowhere), but mom was responsive, praise God. All I remember him saying was PRAY. As I hung up with both of them, I sobbed in Darryl’s arms, and crying out to God. We both sat down and prayed together on the couch, I was still crying. Darryl started reading about strokes online and we continued to pray. What I knew about strokes was nothing good that was for sure.
About 2 hours later, my Dad called back saying that Mom was doing very well! The CAT scan did not show any brain bleed, and she was going to have more tests today (Monday). She did not have any more paralysis on her right side, no droopy mouth, her speech was fine, and she was alert (but kept repeating herself that she was watching Amazing Race when it happened ~like 20x). What an answer to prayer! We couldn’t help but praise God and cry some more.
It is so hard being 1200 miles away and this whole ordeal was so difficult. I didn’t know if I should go be with her and my Dad or to stay here. I decided not to go to Iowa. My Dad and brother both agreed that it wasn’t necessary, because she is doing so great. She is going to stay in the hospital overnight again tonight for observation.
What a mighty God we have and I am so thankful to HIM for the gift of my Mom. I love her and miss her very much. My prayer now is that she will recover quickly and they won’t find anything else she needs to be concerned with.
Hayleigh took this picture of the two of us back in Oct. I love you Mom!
NEW UPDATE at 7pm
My Mom was told by the DR that she had a small blood clot in her brain, but it was not serious. The DR said she had a mini-stroke called a TIA (transient ischemic attack). She will be on an aspirin a day now and she is getting her blood pressure meds tweaked. She said the critical time is almost over (the first 24 hours). The plan is for her to come home tomorrow!
